Dr. Medzhitov has pioneered our current understanding of the innate immune system. He identified a human homologue of Drosophila Toll known as TLR4, and has since contributed to the characterization of the mammalian TLR family. Dr. Medzhitov has received numerous awards including the prestigious Rosenstiel Award for Distinguished Work in Basic Medical Research, the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, and the Emil von Behring Award. Dr. Medzhitov is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
